WHERE ARE THEY FOUND?

  • All over Australia
  • Also in Tasmania

REQUIREMENTS FOR SURVIVAL

PERMANENT WATER SOURCE, FOOD, AND VEGETATION/LOGS

ECOSYSTEM

  • Moist environment
  • Tropical
  • Terrestrial
  • Freshwater
  • Make burrows near streams

PLACE IN THE ECOSYSTEM

  • Eat a lot of a shrimp, crayfish, worms, etc
  • Hunted by animals such as snakes and large birds

THREATS TO SURVIVAL

  • Habitat destruction
  • Bigger animals, but very few

FUN FACTS

  • Contain a very toxic venom in their feet
  • They swim underwater with their eyes closed, so they get prey by sensing electrical currents from their movements
  • They can eat their entire body weight in one day
  • A platypus is featured on the Australian 20c coin
  • They use gravel in mud to chew food
  • Only mammals who lay eggs instead of live birth
