WHAT IS JUSTICE?

JUSTICE

  • Internal whether soul or city-state
  • Understanding and control of self
  • Unity of the classes; Philosopher, Soldier, Merchant
  • A balance and order which would please Nemesis
  • Nemesis the goddess of justice, who could stand as a symbol for plato's justice

PHILOSOPHER KING

  • Wisdom and logic rule, Rational thinking
  • Perfect understanding and control of oneself
  • the prisoner in the Allegory of the cave who escaped
  • Escaped the basic understanding, unlocking conrtol of self
  • Very few are meant to be in this class

SOLDIERS

  • Self-Preservation
  • Courage
  • Keeps merchants in their place
  • Highest virtue is honor and victory
  • The heart of the soul

MERCHANT

  • Basic instincts
  • The worker- self interested
  • Driven by their own wants and desires
  • A hedonist for example
  • Only caring about what makes oneself feel pleasure

UNITY

  • The philosopher king is ruler
  • Soldier servers king and keeps merchant in place
  • Merchant does the basic functions and in the back bone of life
  • Together all are strong, never to be broken
