The two questions I will be answering today are the first two questions, what are plate tectonics and what cause them to move, and which natural process occur as a result of tectonic plate movement.
PLATE TECTONICS Plate tectonics are the plates that make up the earths crust. These plates float atop the asthenosphere, the molten upper part of the mantel.
Plate tectonics move due to convection within the mantel. When the warmer magma near the core rises it cools and then sinks. This creates currents that move tectonic plates. When plate tectonics move they either create convergent boundaries or divergent boundaries. Continued on next page ...
Convergent boundaries are created when tectonic plates crash together. These cause some of the crust to sink into the mantel and then melt and become magma. This can cause volcanos to form. The volcanoes can make pillars of hardened magma That can come above the ocean at points. Continued on next page ...
Plate Tectonics Divergent boundaries occur when plate tectonics are spare tea from each other. This can cause geysers to form. These geysers can spew super heated water, magma, or molten rock. These then solidify and become basalt, creating oceanic crust. The largest mountain range on earth is the product of a divergent boundary.
