PLATE TECTONICS

PLATE TECTONICS

a theory explaining the structure of the earth's crust and many associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates that move slowly over the underlying mantle.

CONVECTION CURRENTS

A CURRENT IN A FLUID THAT RESULTS FROM CONVECTION.

SLAB PULL
Slab pull is the portion of motion of a tectonic plate that can be accounted for by its subduction.

RIDGE PULL
Ridge push or sliding plate force is a proposed mechanism for plate motion in plate tectonics.

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
In plate tectonics, a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.

RESULTING LAND FORM FROM DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
Rift Valley- Baikal Rift Valley (Russia)
Mid Ocean Ridge- The Mid Atlantic Ridge

CONVERGENT
A subduction zone is formed at a convergent plate boundary when one or both of the tectonic plates are made of oceanic crust. The denser plate, made of oceanic crust, is subducted underneath the less dense plate, which can be either continental or oceanic crust.

RESULTING LAND FORM FROM...
Ocean vs continent- volcanic arc
Ocean vs ocean- island arcs
Continent vs continent- mountain ranges

SUBDUCTION ZONE
A subduction zone is the biggest smash-up on Earth, marking the collision between two of the planet's tectonic plates, the pieces of crust that slowly move across the surface over millions of years.

DEEP OCEAN TRENCH
A long narrow steep-sided depression in the earths oceanic crust, ussually lying above the subduction zone
Example: Peruvian trench
(North America)

TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY
A transform boundary, also known as conservative plate boundary since these faults neither create or destroy lithosphere, is a type of fault whose relative motion is predominantly horizontal in either sinistral or dextral direction.

Example: alpine fault of New Zealand

RESULTING EVENT FROM TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
There is nothing that gets created or destroyed in the event of a transform plate boundary
Example: San Andrés fault zone
