PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLATE TECTONICS

BY JOSH COLE

WHAT ARE PLATE TECTONICS?,

  • They are the theory that pieces of Earth's lithosphere are in constant motion that are driven by convection currents in the mantle.

WHAT ARE CONVECTION CURRENTS?

  • Convection currents are the movement of a fluid caused by differences in temperature that transfer heat from one part of the fluid to another.

WHAT IS SLAB PULL?

  • Slab pull is when gravity pulls the plates down to the mantle.

WHAT IS RIDGE PUSH?

  • Ridge push is when magma pushes through the plates

WHAT IS THE DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY?

  • Divergent Plate boundaries is when 2 plates move away from each other and new crust is forming. Magma pushes through and forms new crust. Older crust is at the end of the plates and new crust by the mantle.

ON LAND DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES, FORM

RIFT VALLEYS

IN THE OCEAN, DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES FORM

MID-OCEAN RIDGES( A.K.A. M.O.R.)

WHAT IS THE CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY?

  • The Convergent plate boundary is when 2 plates collide and crust falls into the mantle. This is called subduction.

WHEN OCEAN AND CONTINENTAL CRUST CONVERGE, THEY FORM THE VOLCANIC ARC,

LIKE THE CHILE PERU TRENCH

WHEN OCEAN AND OCEAN CRUST CONVERGE, THEY FORM VOLCANIC ARC ISLANDS,

LIKE THE jAPAN TRENCH

WHEN CONTINENTAL CRUST CONVERGES WITH CONTINENTAL CRUST CONVERGE IT FORMS MOUNTAINS

LIKE THE HIMALAYAS

WHAT IS THE SUBDUCTION ZONES?

  • Subduction zone is the process that takes place at convergent boundaries by which one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate and sinks into the mantle as the plates converge.

WHAT ARE DEEP OCEAN TRENCHES?

  • The deep ocean trenches are deep valleys along the ocean floor beneath where oceanic crust slowly sinks toward the mantle. An example is the deep ocean trench by South America.

WHAT ARE TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY?

  • Transform plate boundaries are when two plates slide past each other causing earthquakes.

WHEN PLATE MOVE ALONG TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES,

IT CAUSES EARTHQUAKES.
