PRESENTATION OUTLINE
PLATE TECTONICS
Pieces of earths lithosphere are in constant motion in the mantle.
The first cause of plate movement is convection currents in the mantle. These currents carry heat and fluid from the inside of the earth.
The second cause of plate movement is gravity. Gravity pulls on the plates in the subduction zone which also helps them move.
The third cause of plate movement is sea floor spreading. New crust forming pushes the plates apart.
A divergent plate boundary is when plates move apart or they are moving away from each other.
A resulting landform from a divergent boundary (land) is a Rift Valley.
A resulting landform from a divergent boundary (sea) is a mid ocean ridge.
A convergent plate boundary is where two plates move toward each other.
A resulting landform from ocean vs. continent is a volcanic arc.
A resulting landform from ocean vs ocean is a mid-ocean ridge.
A resulting landform from continent vs continent is a mountain range.
A subduction zone is the process where ocean crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench&a back into the mantle at a convergent plate
A deep ocean trench is a long, narrow, and deep fault.
An example of a deep ocean is the Puerto Rico trench.
A transform plate boundary is when plates slide past each other .
The resulting of a transform plate boundary is earthquakes and faults.
An example of a transform plate boundary is the alpine fault of New Zealand.
