Plant Cell Vocabulary

Cell - membrane covered structures that contain all of the materials necessary for life. All living things are made of cells.

Cell Membrane - Thin, semi-permeable layer that controls what goes in and out of the cell.

Cell Wall - Located only in plant cells, and gives the plants structure.

Chloroplasts - An organelle found in plant cells in which photosynthesis occurs.

Cytoplasm - The jelly-like inner part of the cell that suspends the organelles.

Nucleus - Usually the largest organelle found in a cell, contains DNA material. Also known as the "brain" of the cell.

Organelle - Specialized structure within a cell that performs a specific function that enables the cell to live and reproduce.

Vacuole - site of water storage in a plant cell.
