PIETRO PERUGINO

BIOGRAPHICAL INTRODUCTION

  • Painted during late 1400s, early 1500s
  • Italian Renaissance painter
  • Attended the Italian Umbrian school of art (painting)
  • Paintings showed aspects of High Renaissance (1490-1527; time of the visual arts)
  • Taught to paint & draw by the famous Luca Signorelli at the Umbrian school

  • By 1492 he was a painter at the confraternity of St. Luke
  • He mainly painted frescos
  • Majority of his paintings were religious, along with some self portraits
  • Eventually he started working in a workshop; the Florentine
  • In the beginning he was apprenticed at a young age to the local art shops, where his talents were discovered

HOW WAS PERUGINO MADE INTO THE ARTIST HE BECAME?

  • From Citta Delle Pieve, Italy- between Siena and Perugia
  • Spent most of his time in Perugia
  • Began as a minor painter in Perugia
  • Raphael (man he taught at his workshop- Florentine workshop) supported & helped him with his largest fresco
  • Italy was very wealthy during the renaissance (Trade)

  • In Italy, Perugino was able to do frescos in chapels and churches
  • People during the High Renaissance time period supported him
  • During most of Perugino's life it was the High Renaissance; that's what he painted

WHY IS THIS PERSON CONSIDERED PART OF THE RENAISSANCE?

  • Perugino's artwork has vanishing points; Example: "Delivery of the Keys" painting
  • The man in "Pieta" and the baby in "The Virgin and Child" painting show humanism
  • His paintings focused on religion
  • All of his works have multiple characteristics of art during the Renaissance time
  • Many of his works were in churches and chapels (shows how religious & important they were)
