WHO WAS HE? Pierre de Fermat was a French man famous for creating Fermat's Last Theorem. His work lead to infinitesimal calculus. He also contributed to analytic geometry, differential calculus, and number theory.
HIS LIFE He was born in 1601 in Beaumont-de-Lomagne, France. His father was a wealthy leather merchant. His birthplace that was a mansion, is now a museum. He studied mathematics at the university of Toulouse. Later he studied Civil Law at the university of Orleans.
Fermat is best remembered for this work in number theory, in particular for Fermat's Last Theorem. This theorem states that Xn + Yn = Zn Has no nonzero integer solutions for x, y and z when n>2.
Some further problems Fermat worked on: Find all solutions of Nx + 1 = y for N not a square. Prove that the sum of two cubes cannot be a cube Prove that there are exactly two integer solutions of x + 4 =y
