PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

IN ADOLESCENCE

What is this?
Adolescence is the period of development that begins at puberty and ends at adulthood. The typical age range is from 12 to 18 years, and this stage of development has many predictable physical milestones.

CAUSES

  • Initiated by hormones that start in the brain
  • Areas of the body are affected by the influx of hormones

DEVELOPMENT IN GIRLS

  • Beginning at ages 8 to 13
  • First pubertal change: breast development
  • Pubic hair development: shortly after breast development
  • Hair under the arms: 12 years old
  • Menstrual periods: 10 to 16.5 years old

DEVELOPMENT IN BOYS

  • Beginning of puberty: 9.5 to 14 years old
  • First pubertal change: enlargement of the testicles
  • Penis enlargement: begins approximately one year after the testicles begin enlarging
  • Appearance of pubic hair: 13.5 years old
  • Nocturnal emissions (or "wet dreams"): 14 years old
  • Hair under the arms and on the face, voice change, and acne: 15 years old

Other physical changes inside & out
Brain- children will expand improved self-control
Bones- children will get stronger
Skin- children will develop acne
Sleep patterns- children will go to sleep later and sleep later in the day

Nature vs Nurture
Naturally every child Develops eventually but if one child eats more protein and drinks more milk than another they will develop in other ways
