What is a physical change?

  • No new substance is formed
  • Generally reversible using physical means
  • Atoms can be rearranged but chemical composition remains the same
  • Changes in size, volume or shape but the type of material remains the same

Examples of Physical Changes

  • Aluminum foil is cut in half.
  • Butter melts on warm toast.
  • A juice box in the freezer freezes.
  • mixing sand and water
  • breaking a glass

Clues it is a chemical change and not physical change

  • Makes a substance that wasn't there before.
  • light, heat, color change, gas production, odor, or sound.
  • It is a physical change only if starting and ending materials
  • Even though they might LOOK different

Activity

  • You will start at the station you are seated at now
  • When you hear the timer you will have 2 minutes to clean up
  • When you here the bell, rotate to the right
  • At each station follow the directions and record data in your notebook
  • Once we have competed all rotations, we will have a class debrief
