WHAT IS THE PHONOGRAPH LIKE???

THE PHONOGRAPH

  • The phonograph had a disk reading needle
  • "Gramophone" can be applied to any record player
  • It has a (usually gold) horn
  • A lid was opened to access the record
  • Put in the record
  • Wind up a lever and the music plays

PHONOGRAPH II

  • The options were:78 rpm (rotations per minute),45 rpm, 33rpm
  • Thomas Edison made the phonograph in 1877
  • First record was "Mary had a little lamb"
  • Thomas Edison was known as the "Wizard of Menlo Park"

Phonograph evolution

  • First version was the 1877 tinfoil phonograph
  • In 1888 a talking machine that recorded and played back sound was patented by Emile Berliner
  • The gramophone had a needle that moved from side to side
  • In the cylinder phonograph, the stylus (needle) moved up and down (hill-and-dale movement)

  • With 1 take, the gramophone pressed thousands of copies
  • To make 500 copies, the phonograph used 25 takes
  • The gramophone was cheaper

Electricity

  • The gramophone uses electricity in most of its models
  • The electricity was also invented by Thomas Alva Edison
