First version was the 1877 tinfoil phonograph
In 1888 a talking machine that recorded and played back sound was patented by Emile Berliner
The gramophone had a needle that moved from side to side
In the cylinder phonograph, the stylus (needle) moved up and down (hill-and-dale movement)
