Lets break it down

  • Phenomes- the smallest parts of sound in spoken words that make a difference in how a word sounds compared to another word.

Phonemic awareness is the understanding that the sounds of spoken language work together to make words.

Children can show us their awareness by...

  • changing the phoneme in the word. EX: Hat to Pat
  • isolating and saying the first or last sound of the word. EX: beginning of bat is b, the ending of cat is t

Another Example:

The word 'mat' has three phonemes: /M/A/T/

English has 41 phonemes
