Biography

  • Full Name: Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard
  • Born: May 28, 1818
  • Died: February 20, 1893
  • Louisiana Native
  • Was also an author, politician, and inventor

Early Years

  • Beauregard was educated at a New Orleans Boarding School.
  • Also attended the Freres Puegnet School in New York.
  • Enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1834
  • Married Marie Laure Villere in September 1841.

Pre-Civil War

  • Beauregard studied engineering at West Point 
  • Served as an engineer in the Mexican-American War
  • Returned to Louisiana after the Mexican War was over
  • Beauregard resigned from the U.S Army in 1861

EARLY CIVIL WAR

  • Beauregard ordered the first shots of the war at Fort Sumter
  • It was here that he defeated Sherman's forces
  • Beauregard led the south to victory at the first Battle of Bull Run

Key Battles

  • Beauregard commanded armies in the Western Theater
  • Some of his most famous battles were at Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth.
  • Returned to Charleston in 1863 to defend Union attacks 
  • His greatest achievement was saving the city of Petersburg, Virginia
  • Beauregard was replaced as general late in the war by Joseph E. Johnson

Post Civil War

  • After the Southern defeat in the Civil War Beauregard returned to Louisiana
  • This is where Beauregard settled down and became a railroad director
  • In 1877 Beauregard became a supervisor of the Louisiana state lottery
  • In 1979 Beauregard became the adjuent general of the Louisiana militia
  • In his later years Beauregard renewed his long-running feud with Jefferson Davis
