PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE WESTWARD EXPANSION.

By: Peyton Pruett

INVENTIONS LEADING TO THE WESTWARD EXPANSION

COTTON GIN

  • The cotton gin was a machine that seperated the cotton fibers from their seeds and disposed of the unused materials.
  • This helped the western expansion because allowed more cotton to be produced and gave u.s reason to expand west.
  • The cotton gin seperated all of the seed so they could be used again for regrowth of cotton.
  • This was much easier than before the cotton gin because it would take more workers to get the same result as the gin.
  • While with the new cotton gins the seeds are saved, there are less workers, and it takes less than half the time.

THE TELEGRAPH

  • The telegraph was a machine that used morse code to send messages to faraway destinations in about an hour.
  • This was much easier than sending the message through the nail which would take about fourntimess as long
  • Before this invention people had to wait a long time just to send messeges back and fourth.
  • While once the telegraph was introduced it only took about an hour compared to a week to receive.
  • The telegraph affected the westward expansion because it helped the railroads receive more efficant news and it could tell reports of the weather.

THE STEAMBOAT

  • A steam boat is a boat thats main propurlusion(act of pushing or moving) is steam.
  • Before the steamboat there were only rafts flat rafts, and things that didn't have moaters or ways to steer the raft.
  • After the steamboat there was easier way of steering, and much faster than a raft.
  • It helped the westward expansion because it could travel up stream, could go two, ways, and was cheaper than railroads.

RAILROADS

  • A form of rail transport of a series of vehicals that travel on the road.
  • Before the railroads were made travel consisted of stage coaches which took 4 times as long as a train would. Also cost a lot.
  • After they were made goods were taken across the country much faster, the rails never froze, and much cheaper
  • This helped the western expansion because it was much faster than horse drawn train, and the rails never froze causing setbacks

PATH TOOK BY U.S TO GET TO THE WEST

INFO LEFT OUT

  • The rails were much cheaper than taking a horse drawn train(railroad).
  • Cotton was made twice as fastbwas before the cotton gin.
