General Custer had a dog named Jack. Dogs are commonly found at army headquarters, they fought, they were spies,hospital dogs, messengers, and prison dogs.

The soldiers in the American Civil War had many horses including General Lee's horse named Traveller,Gen.Ulysses S. Grant had a favorite named Cincinnati.Horses were used for transportation and companionship.

The civil war had some very exotic pets including General Lee's chicken, the 3rd Louisiana CSA had a donkey,The 12th Wisconsin Volunteers had a tamed bear and the 43rd Mississippi Infantry had a camel named Douglas.

Old Abe an eagle is one of the most famous mascots.He was the official mascot for Co. C, 8th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers, who named him after President Lincoln.During battle he flew over the fighting and screeched.Confederates tried to kill him in order to demoralize the troops.
