EARLY LIFE

  • As a child Peter was taught by many tutors.
  • At age 10 the Russian council chose Peter to become Tsar.
  • His mother forced him into marriage and it failed as 10 years later he forced his wife to become a nun.
  • 1689 Peter planned to take power away from his half sister Sophia after she failed two campaigns.
  • Was very tall 6 ft 8 but had small hands and feet he also had very big eyes and seemed that he had some kind of epilepsy.

WIFE'S AND KIDS

  • He had two wife's
  • He had 14 kids but 3 kids survived through adulthood.
  • His oldest kid Alexi was thought be planning to over throw the emporor and
  • Convicted tortured and sent to prison.
  • Peter could of had he real eased if he signed a paper but hesitated. He died in prison.

Peter later wanted to get power in the oceans. But Sweden had some nice power in Baltic Sea so he decided to go after the Black Sea. The Black Sea was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. His main goal was to capture the fortress of azov. His first attempt was a failure but later got it.

THE GREAT NORTHERN WAR

  • Got peace with the Ottoman Empire for a while.
  • So he decided to capture the Baltic Sea controlled by Sweden.
  • First attempt at the Baltic Sea was a fail at the battle of a Narva in 1700.
  • Peter them kept kicking butt but Charles XII king of Sweden wouldn't back down.
  • So Charles died in a battle in 1718.

PETER'S LATER YEARS

  • Oct. 22 1721 soon after peace was made with Sweden he became
  • Emperor of all of Russia
  • In 1722 he created the table of ranks.

PETER THE GREAT'S DEATH

  • He had urinary problems in 1723.
  • In 1724 he had surgery to remove 4 pounds of blocked urine.
  • Died in 1725 due to uremia and gangrene.
  • He was 52 years old and had a reign of 42 years.
