HISTORY OF PERU

In the Peruvian Andes, Archaelogists have discovered the highest Ice Age human settlement in the world!

The Incan Empire began in the 13th Century. Machu Picchu was built for an Incan emperor.

The Incans were the most powerful warriors and army of the time. They ruled over 9-18 million people.

Francisco Pizarro led Spanish conquistadors in Peru. They conquered the Incans in December 1532.

In 1824, Peru won it's independance from Spain. Peruvian Independance Day is celebrated July 28.

Peru has a democratic government. Peruvians may vote in elections from ages 18-70.

Peruvian presidents are elected for a five year term. Peru's current President is Ollanta Humala.

GEOGRAPHY

Peru is in South America. Peru is south of the Equator and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Peru is east of the Pacific Ocean.

The capitol of Peru is Lima. Lima is the largest city in Peru. Eight million people live in Lima.

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. It is located on the boarder of Peru. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world.

Peru is the source of a really important river called the Amazon.

PERUVIAN SPORTS

The most popular sport in Peru is fútbol. The Peruvian national fútbol team has competed four times in the FIFA World Cup.

Peru has won four Olympic medals. Three in shooting events and one in volleyball.

DAILY LIFE IN PERU

The two main languages in Peru are Spanish and Quechua. Peruvian curency is called Nuevo Sol.

Peru's top exports are gold and copper. Peru is the 8th largest producer of coffee.

Llamas are important to Peruvians. They are used for food, wool and a family pet.

Peru only has two seasons: winter and summer. In Peru, summer is the rainy season.

PERUVIAN FAMOUS PEOPLE AND CELEBRATIONS

The majority of Peruvian's are Roman Catholic. A number of major celebrations are religious: Fiesta da la Cruz (the festival of the cross) and El Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles) are religous celebrations.

St. Rose of Lima is the first person born in the Americas to be canonized. Her feast day is August 23.

Saint Martin de Porres' feast day is November 3rd. He has a major shrine
in Lima.

FOOD

Peruvians' like Inca Kola better than Coca Cola. Inca Kola was created in Peru in 1935.

In Peru, _________ are not pets but delicious food. This special dish has a national holiday in October.

The potato is from Peru. Peru has over 3,000 types of potatoes.

Peru found the rarest cacao on the earth, Fortunato No. 4. This rare cacao was lost for 100 years and rediscovered in Peru.

In Southern Peru, Nazca lines were made between 500 BC and 500 AD. We still have no real idea why the lines were made.

Peruvians create musical instruments out of gourds. The Guiro is a traditional peruvian percussion instrument.
