PERTUSSIS

WHAT IS IT?

  • Commonly known as Whooping Cough
  • Highly contagious respiratory tract infection
  • 20k-200k cases a year
  • Rare

SYMPTOMS

  • Cough: chronic, phlegm, can be severe
  • Nasal: sneezing, congestion, runny nose
  • Whole Body: fatigue or fever
  • Other: vomiting, episodes of not breathing, watery eyes

HOW YOU GET IT

  • Severe for children
  • Very contagious
  • Spread by coughing or sneezing
  • Inhalation of the bacteria

TREATMENTS

  • Antibiotics: Bactrim, Zithromax, Biaxin
  • Self: Mucinex

PREVENTION

  • DPT (TDaP) vaccine
  • DTP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Pertussis)
  • A series of bacterial infections that cause breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death

SIDE EFFECTS OF VACCINE

  • Normal: fussiness, tiredness, and vomitting
  • Moderate: seizure, high fevers
  • Severe: allergic reaction, long term seizures, coma, permanent brain damage
