PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PERIODIC TABLE

HISTORY

  • In 1869 Russian chemist called Dimitri Mendeleev started to organise elements into a table called periodic table, arranging chemical elements by atomic mass. He predicted the discovery of other elements in the future, and he even left spaces open in his periodic table for them.

GROUP 1

  • Because there are patterns and trends in the periodic table we can predict an elements properties.
  • One of the similarities in group 1 is that they all have 1 electron in there outer shell
  • Group 1 elements get more reactive as you go down

GROUP 7

  • In group 7 the melting point increases from top to bottom.Unlike group 1
  • They are non metals
  • The most reactive element goes with the metal.

GROUP 0

  • The noble gases have very low melting and boiling points.
  • At room temperature it is a transparent gas
  • The boiling point goes up from bottom to top.

The Periodic table is very useful because you can make predictions of an element if you have learnt the patterns.

FRANCIUM

  • Francium is the most reactive alkali metal and reacts with water to make a explosion like the one in the picture!
