Background Information
- Percy Bysshe Shelley was a strict vegetarian.
- Born on August 4, 1792.
- Shelley ent to oxford in 1810 and was already a well published writer
- He was kicked out of Oxford for writing a pamphlet titled The Necessity of Atheism in 1811. This also lead to a poor relationship with his family.

He wrote this poem when a British museum was getting a part of the Ozymandias sculpture. He was in competition with another author by the name of Horace Smith to write a poem about this.

The poem is guided towards anyone. The message is very vague and fits a wide variety of people.

The purpose of the poem is to show that nothing is permanent. Even King Ramses II will become nothing but dust.

The subject of the poem is decay and how history diminishes over time. In the poem, the statue which once stood tall will become a 'colossal wreck'.

The tone of the poem is very realistic. It is down to earth when it notes that everyone and everything will fall at some point.
