Hello my name is Curtis Womble from pky. Today I will talk to you about Pedro Menendez.

An explorer is a person who conquers new land for their country or for themselves

I looked at other explorers like Pedro Menendez and used the information to create my idea

Menendez was born in 1519. When Menendez was 14 he ran away from home in 1533 to be come a sailor. In 1549 at the age of 30 the king of Spainwanted him to fight pirates off the coastline. He did such an amazing job that Philip II let him start a settlement.

Menendez and his men wanted to sail up the St. John's river to fort Caroline a French brace but the French blocked it off so the went South some and landed he called it st. Agustin. The main reason he went is the king of Spain want him to fight pirates off the coastline and he did and anmazing job then Philip II said he could build a base in Florida

Menendez attacked fort Caroline after most of fort Caroline men attempt to attack st. Augustine while they were building st. Augustine but then died from a storm. He took fort Caroline and killed all the men and released the children and women then came back to the crash and killed most of the survivors and let the ones who said the were catholic go back to France. Menendez also became the first Spanish colonial governor. Another reason he came is he was Roman Catholic and wanted to change the belief of the native Americans to catholic.

Later he went back to Spain an was gathering more people to come but died September 17 1574 before he could come back to Florida.

I chose Pedro Menendez because he is the main person that I already had a lot of information on

Pedro Menendez fits my definition of an explorer because he conquered land for Spain in Florida like fort Caroline.

I think it is important to learn about explorers so it will help us with our history

It's quite similar because we are exploring new for mate and even new area
