Egypt- Unit 1
Monumental architecture is a man-made piece of work that is important to your culture. Pieces like these are usually made from stone. Usually, many people know about these pieces because they are famous within your country.

The Great Pyramid
Cairo, Egypt
2584 B.C.

The Great Pyramid was built for Knufu, the second of the eight kings in the fourth dynasty.

Symbolism: Meant to show the talents of their very advanced civilization.

  • Mortuary Temple of Knufu (Giza)
  • The Great Pyramids (Giza)
  • Luxor Temple (Luxor City)

The Great Pyramids still exist today.

The Great Pyramids and all of the other monumental architecture in Egypt represent peace and power.

Constantinople

The Hagia Sophia was dedicated to Emperor Constantius, the son of Emperor Constantine.

Symbolism: The Hagia Sophia was a symbol for Christianity.

  • Santa Constanza(Constantinople)
  • Hagia Sophia(Constantinople)

The Hagia Sophia still exists today.

The Hagia Sophia was the finest and most ornately decorated Eastern Orthodox church in the world.

The Hagia Sophia is built like a square with two circles in the middle. The circles are said to represent vEternity, Infinity, and the Spiritual Realm.

  • The Great Pyramids were built to support the king in the afterlife.
  • Hagia Sophia was built for the emperor and was made into a church.
