Wheat

Where is wheat made?

  • Australia harvests majority of wheat.
  • The main states in Australia that make wheat are Western Australia, New South Wales,South Australia,Victoria and Queensland.
  • These states export their wheat to Asian and Middle East regions.
  • Planted in autumn where mild winters are e.g. South Asia.
  • Harvest in mild zones.

Throughputs in wheat

  • They have to get the seed beds ready by harvesting water from furrow to help wheat grow.
  • They have to add dressing for seeds to protect them from diseases and pests.
  • Place weed killer near wheat.
  • Farmers sow their seeds by hand in soil.
  • Wheat is harvested in spring and summer in September to December.

Physical inputs for wheat to be successful

  • When they plant wheat, the depth of wheat is important, if too low the wheat struggles from herbicides and if too high may take longer to grow.
  • Seed size: Larger seeds have healthier seedlings.
  • Spacing of seeds: If seeds are spread too far apart some seeds won't get water or sun and planted in 15-30cm rows.
  • Herbicides: To keep seeds from having pests on them.

Cultural inputs for success of wheat

  • Wheat is taken out of soil by using a machine called header harvester.
  • Delivered to wheat company.
  • Add fertilizers to help wheat grow.

Production levels of wheat

Outputs generated by wheat

  • Wheat in Western Australia earns 2-3 billion each year.
  • Wheat sector needs skilled people such as farmers and harvesters.
  • Impacts of wheat are deforestation, soil erosion and fertility, water is wasted , and greenhouse gases are produced, Adding poisons into air such as machinery fuel.

Challenges to Food Production

Climate change

  • * The climate change is affecting the great barrier reef a lot and the coral reef around the world * The causing of climate change is an increase in the greenhouse gas emissions operating by human activities including burning fossil fuels, agriculture, and land clearing. * IPCC has warned the Great Barrier Reef that they could experience annual coral bleaching events by mid-to late-century under current rates of ocean warming.

Increasing population and urbanisation

  • * Half of the world’s population is living in the cities & it is increasing at rate of 1.5 percent. This rapid urbanization coupled with population growth is changing the landscape of humans, making significant risks on the living conditions, the environment, and development. * People living in the cities without water or good sanitation has increased in time *Urbanization & population growth have resulted in the development of slums and the informal of settlements in cities across the globe.

Environmental factors

  • * They are the final of the determinants of health listed in the HSC PDHPE syllabus. * There not just geographical location but also access to health services and technology * People who live in rural and remote areas can mean that they are exposed to pollution or have limited access to clean water while many live-in cities around the country.
