PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PATTERN

is created by motifs repeated in a reoccurring order.

MOTIF

is the unit of a two-dimensional pattern.

MODULE

is a pattern in three-dimensional form.

RHYTHM

When motifs or elements are repeated, alternated, or otherwise arranged, the space between them or how they overlap can create rhythm. In visual rhythm, design motifs become the beats.

ALTERNATED

Two or more different motifs may be alternated, such as the black and red squares in a checkerboard; a single motif might be flipped, mirrored or rotated or the placement or spacing between motifs can be alternated. This is an elaboration on a regular rhythm. Because of the variety of the complex motifs, it is less monotonous than the regular rhythm.

Flowing rhythm

is created by undulating elements and intervals, bending and curving motifs and spaces. Flowing rhythms can be seen in streams, waves, sand dunes, rolling hills and wind-blown grasses.

PROGRESSIVE RHYTHM

When a motif changes a little bit each time it is repeated the result is transformation in a steady sequence. The motif progresses from one thing to another.
