Definition-a qualifying, explanatory, or appositive word, phrase, clause, or sentence that interrupts a syntactic construction without affecting it. In writing usually marked by commas, parentheses, or dashes, as in James Williams—you must know him—is coming tonight.

Purpose- to include material that you want to de-emphasize or that wouldn't normally fit into the flow of your text but you want to include.

Derived from the Greek word paretithenai. Latin "to insert beside"
