DEFINITION

  • An inflammation in the pancreas

ACUTEPANCREAITIS

  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Abdominal pain that radiates to your back
  • Abdominal pain that feels worse after eating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting, tenderness when touching the abdomen

CHRONIC PANCREAITIS

  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Oily, smelly stools

CAUSES

  • Occurs when digestive enzymes produced in your
  • Pancreas become active while inside the pancreas
  • And causes damage to the organ. High tryglyceride levels in the blood, injury to the abdomen
  • Alcoholism, gallstones, abdominal surgery, certain medications, infection, pancreatic cancer
  • Cigarette smoking, cystic fibrosis, family history, high calcium levels in blood

TREATMENTS

  • Usually requires hospitalization
  • Fasting: stop eating for a couple of days in the hospital
  • Pain medications, enzymes to improve digestion, changes to your diet
  • IV fluids, treatment for alcohol dependence, pain management
  • Procedures to remove bile duct obstructions, gall bladder surgery
