GEOGRAPHY

- Panama is a mountainous isthmus, connecting North and South America
- Located at 8.5380° N, 80.7821° W.
- Panama is in between Costa Rica and Columbia
The Volcan Baru mountain is the tallest mountain in Panama.
Explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa is best known for crossing Panama and reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1510. He is on Panamanian currency. It is called the Balboa.
HISTORY
- Panama was originally claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1502, for Spain.
- In 1821, Spanish rulers were overthrown and Panama became a provine of Colombia.
- In 1903, Panama declared independence from Colombia.
- In 1879, Ferdinand de Lesseps supervised over the original construction of the Panama Canal. This project was a failure.
- The U.S began construction on the Canal. Their project was completed in 1914.
Omar Torrijos Herrara was a dictator, keeping his position from 1972 to 1981.
RELIGION
- Roman Catholicism was brought to Panama by the Spanish.
- Most Panamanians are Roman Catholic.
- Panama's constitution provides freedom of religion.
HOLIDAYS
- Panamanians burn life sized dolls on New Years's Eve to symbolize getting rid of the bad things from the previous year.
- On Christmas Eve Panamanians decorate elaborately with Nativity Scenes and wreaths
