Explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa is best known for crossing Panama and reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1510. He is on Panamanian currency. It is called the Balboa.

  • Panama was originally claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1502, for Spain.
  • In 1821, Spanish rulers were overthrown and Panama became a provine of Colombia.
  • In 1903, Panama declared independence from Colombia.
  • In 1879, Ferdinand de Lesseps supervised over the original construction of the Panama Canal. This project was a failure.
  • The U.S began construction on the Canal. Their project was completed in 1914.

Omar Torrijos Herrara was a dictator, keeping his position from 1972 to 1981.
