PRESENTATION OUTLINE

COASTAL STATES

  • Middle and Northern California, Oregon and Washington are the most western states.
  • Emphasis on seafood along the coast
  • All of these states have a large Asian population

HAWAII

  • Hawaii is a chain of 132 islands, only about 8 are inhabited
  • Besides Caucasians there are Japanese, Filipinos, and chinese.
  • Much of the Hawaiian food has to be shipped from the mainland to the islands.

WAGON TRAINS

  • Wagon trails set out for the fertile land of the Oregon country in the 1840s
  • Outfitting a wagon was a costly endeavor for people seeking adventure
  • People left their homes and families in groups of four
  • There was little variety in the diet& a set supplies list

RAILROADS

  • In 1849 gold was discovered in the Sacramento valley bringing thousands of "49ers"
  • The building of railroads brought Chinese to work as laborers
  • California is the most diverse state
  • They raise 70+ fruits & lots of vegetables

FRUITS&NUTS

  • The area of Washington and Oregon is known for its fruit& nuts
  • Nearly half of the pears and one- fourth to 1/2 of the apples grown in Us Come from the pacific NW

APLETS&COTLETS

  • Since 1920 the Pacific Northwest has been enjoying a candy made from fruits& nuts
  • Applets are apples and walnuts
  • Colters are apricots with walnuts
  • As the years have gone by the combinations of fruits& nuts has grown

POTATOES

  • Idaho grows more potatoes than any other state
  • The volcanic soil in good for growing potatoes
  • Potatoes originated from Peru.

LENTILS

  • Lentils are a legume which nutritionists are encouraging Americans to eat
  • All of the Us grown lentils come from Idaho

SPAM

  • Canned luncheon meat, manufactured by Horner foods corp
  • 100% pure pork and ham product
  • Spam is very popular in Hawaii

COFEE& MACADAMIA NUTS

  • Both grow on the big island
  • Hawaii is the only state in the union that grows coffee

PINEAPPLE

  • When one think of Hawaii they often think of pineapple
  • At the airport, it's common to see pineapple being shipped to the mainland

SUGARCANE

THE MAINE AGRICULTURAL CROP OF HAWAII

  • Traditional starchy Hawaiian food
  • Made by pounding cooked underground stem of the taro plant into paste
  • Eaten by scooping it out of a bowl with your fingers

POG

  • Pineapple, orange, and guava
  • POGs are the caps to the jars containing a combination drink of these fruits
  • Hawaii abounds with fruit drinks
  • They are often sweetened or served with a fresh slice of pineapple or sugarcane

LUAU

  • Hawaiian feast
  • Center piece of the meal is a pig
  • Meal is accompanied with traditional dancing and singing
