PACIFIC STATES AND HAWAII

COASTAL STATES INTRO

  • The Pacific Coastal states are:Oregon, Washington and middle & Northern California
  • Idaho has similar soil conditions despite not being on the coast
  • Lots of seafood is served here, along with Hawaii
  • California was owned by Mexico until 1848 and became a state in 1859
  • The gold rush increased California with goldseekers

HAWAII INTRO

  • Hawaii is a group of 132 islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, most people living on the island, Oahu
  • The islands were discovered by others in 1778, and became a possession of the U.S in 1898
  • It became the United States 50th state in 1959
  • The enviroment is good for growing tropic plants because of the mild climate
  • US states to live in because frood has to be shipped from it

WAGON TRAINS

  • People came in wagons to the Oregon country (Oregon, Washington & Idaho)
  • They came for fertile land in a six month journey during 1840s
  • The wagons had at least three oxen and carried a supply of that weight 2,500 lbs
  • They would often ate a consist diet of meat, coffee and bread

RAILROADS

  • Many railroads were built during America's great expansion
  • The tracks helped bring the Chinese who would work in California

FRUITS & NUTS

  • 1/2 of pears & 1/4 of apples grown America are from the Pacific Northwest
  • The first apples were planted in Vancouver, Washington. Other fruits grown are:
  • Plums, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, sweet cherries, walnuts & filberts

APLETS & COTLETS

  • Aplets and cotlets were made in the Pacific Northwest during 1920
  • They are a candy made from a combination of fruits & nuts
  • Aplets are a mixture of walnuts & apples, when cotlets are from apricots & walnuts
  • Armenian immigrants made them when they were having trouble selling apples

POTATOES

  • Idoha grows the most potatoes than the other states
  • The volcanic soils helps make large, fluffy potatoes
  • Potatoes came from Peru
  • The Spaniards took them and brought them back to Europe
  • Potatoes are also popular in Germany, England, Ireland and the Scandinavian countries

LENTILS

  • Lentils are a legume, a type of seed
  • Nutritionists considered very healthy
  • 100% of lentils in America are grown in Idaho

SPAM

  • Spam is a canned luncheon meat made in Austin, Minnesota during 1937
  • It was made from pure pork and ham
  • It became popular in Hawaii during World War 2
  • In 1994, Hawaii bought over 4 cans for every citizen

COFFEE & MACADAMIA NUTS

  • Macadamia nuts anf Kons coffee grow in Hawaii
  • Hawaii is the only states in the Union that grows coffee

PINEAPPLE

  • Pineapples are very associated with Hawaii
  • There are boxes of pineapples in Hawaiian airports

SUGARCANE

  • Sugarcane is the main agricultural crop of Hawaii
  • Raw sugar is removed from this crop from mills

POI

  • A traditional Hawaiian food
  • It is turned into paste when the stem of the taro plant is pounded

POG

  • POG stands for Pineapple, Orange, and Guava
  • Pog is a juice made from the ones formerly listed
  • The game pogs is made from the caps on the drink
  • The drink is sometimes served with pineapple or a some sugar cane

LUAU

  • A luau is a feast
  • The main piece served is a pig roasted over a fire
  • Their is also dancing and singing
