WHAT MAKES IRON RUST?

  • When oxygen and water mix together
  • Its reacts over a long period of time
  • The metal has mosture it begins to rust
  • Metal and water reacts slowly turning oxide

There are different ways in which we can use an experiment to identify rusting on iron. Here is one of them:
-bust that rust... This is an experiment where you have two pieces of iron and on one you leave it to mix in with water and oxygen and the other you separate the iron from water and oxygen and see witch one has the best result at the end of the 3 day period.

WAYS TO PREVENT RUSTING:

  • Keep away from water or moisture
  • Cover the object in oil or paint it
  • Keep away from oxygen as much as possible
  • Wipe the surface often with a soft dry cloth
  • Treat with heat to stop water occuring

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY IRON RUSTING...

  • It weakens the metal meaning less quality
  • Shorten the live of the metal object
  • It leads to disintegration of the metal
  • Will increase the maintenance of the metal and the structure
  • Leads to expensive machinery not being able to move

Word equation for rusting of iron....

Iron + oxygen + water = iron oxide ( rust )
