Current FAA Regulations

  • "Commercial" unmanned aircraft systems ("UAS") unlawful
  • UAS is considered "aircraft" in N.A.S.
  • Must obtain certificate of airworthiness
  • Or Section 333 "Exemption" from current regulations.

"Hobbyist Rule" A.C. 91-57 (1981)

  • Under 400 feet
  • Purely recreational purpose
  • Stay away from populated areas

FAA recently introduced proposed rules for "small" and "micro" UAS. Comments should be submitted before April 24, 2015.

Rules for "Small" UAS

  • Under 55 lbs.
  • Within VOS at all times
  • No flights over bystanders

Rules for "Small" UAS

  • Flights during daylight only
  • Operator must be FAA certified
  • Only one UAS flight at a time
  • Pre-flight inspection

Rules for "Micro" UAS

  • Under 4.4 lbs
  • Under 400 feet altitude
  • Under 35 mph
  • Operator self certifies
  • Flying over bystanders allowed
  • "Frangible" material construction
