President Nixon feared their actions would cause issue with treaty negotiations with the Soviet Union

Formed in 1865 when the civil war ended
Invisible Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
Founded by confederate veterans who wanted to restore white supremacy
By 1870 extended into every state
Assassinated African American politicians, religious figures, and community leaders.

In the 1920s the group had an estimated 4 million members

Still active in the Deep South membership is estimated to be around 10,000
