THE BRITISH TAKE ACTION

  • The Battle of Quebec was started in 1759
  • It was fought because of the conflict between France and Britain
  • The French were coming to make themselves rulers of North America.
  • The French made well-armed forts in the Great Lakes Region
  • They also had a network of alliances with the the Native Americans.

THE BRITISH TAKE ACTION

  • The French and their allies were winning control over the land.
  • They chose General Edward Braddock to help the British
  • His mission was to drive the French out of Ohio Valley
  • In 1755, Braddock started out with 1400 red-coat soldiers
  • He also had a smaller group of blue-coat soldiers

THE BRITISH TAKE ACTION

  • George Washington helped Braddock's campaign
  • His style was marching but it wasn't suited for this type of battle
  • They marched to Fort Duquesne and ignored Washington's advice
  • Braddock died and lost nearly 1000 men
  • Britain declared war in France. This was known as the Seven Year War

THE BRITISH TAKE ACTION

  • The French captured a lot of British forts; the Natives killed settlers
  • Britain's chance of winning became greater when William Pitt came to power
  • He helped them because he was a great military planner and much more
  • Pitt made the British pay for the war so taxes went up
  • He wanted to capture French Canada, so he sent Amherst and Wolfe

  • In 1758 Amherst and Wolfe captured the fortress at Louisberg
  • That same year they got Fort Frontenac and Lake Ontario
  • Another British force took Fort Dequesne in Pennsylvania
  • It was renamed Fort Pitt

THE FALL OF FRANCE

  • The British had many victories in 1759
  • James Wolfe's troops found an unguarded path to Quebec
  • The British troops surprised and defeated the French army
  • General Amherst captured Montreal the following year
  • The fall of Montreal and Quebec was the end of war in North America

THE FALL OF FRANCE

  • In 1763, the Treaty of Paris forced France to give Canada most of the land east of the Mississippi
  • Spain gave Great Britain Florida. Spain also seized French land west of the Mississippi
  • The treaty marked the end of French rule.
  • The continent was divided between Spain and Great Britain.
  • The British had so many victories in 1759.

TROUBLE ON THE FRONTIER

  • The French lost their allies,the Native Americans.
  • This lead to the British moving into the native Americans land
  • There was a war in Ottawa
  • They defeated the British troops
  • They tried to make peace but conflict broke out again
