Early 1900s - Ragtime

-Fast, offbeat, cheerful piano music
- First played by piano men in the local bars of St.John, Missouri

The 20s & 30s - Jazz
- Nicknamed the "Devil's Music" because it was played by black people during segregation.

-The white people of New Orleans kicked the jazz musicians out of town, ironically leading to the spread of jazz across the country.

'50s - '60s: ROCK, POP,
& THE BRITISH INVASION

- Elvis Presley becomes the "King of Rock and Roll".
- The Beatles sold more albums in the USA than any other artist.

The '70s : DISCO!
-Disco was heavily influenced by Latin & Soul music, it was made to be danced to.

- Eventually disco music was heard in lots of movies and on shows like Saturday Night Live.

The '80s
- The image of an artist became more important than ever with the creation of music videos.
The '90s
- Newer styles of music became popular like alternative rock, hip hop, and rap.

Today
- Most songs on the radio are collaborations of different artists or feature a famous rapper.
- Because of advanced electronics DJs are becoming more popular.
