Texas Rev. & Annexation Issue

Texas Revolution

  • Texas belonged to Spain and then to Mexico
  • Opened TX to U.S. settlers
  • Friction between Mex. gov't and settlers
  • Texas Revolution - defeats at Alamo and Goliad
-Opened Texas to settlers from US-generous land grants in return for convert to Catholicism and becoming citizens of Mexico
-1830-30K people living in TX 90% were white
-Friction developed between the Mexican gov't and settlers-not many converted to Catholicism or applied for Mex. citizenship
-Rapid population growth worried Mex. officials-slaves could no longer to brought into any part of Mexico and Americans could no longer settle there
-The Texans rebelled and declared independence on March 2, 1836
-The Texas Revolution lasted for less than 2 months-Defeats at the Alamo and Goliad, forces led by Sam Houston destroyed the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836

Annexation Issue

  • Sam Houston-President of Rep. of Texas
  • Issues with admittance to the Union
  • Jackson postponed annexation
-TX wanted to join the U.S.
-Many Amer. against it-TX allowed slavery, Whigs opposed admitting another slave state-others thought it might provoke a war with Mexico
-Jackson thought that admitting TX might cause the Dem. to lose the presidency in the next election

Polk and Manifest Destiny

Expansionist Spirit

  • Land, opportunity and adventure
  • John L. O'Sullivan coined Manifest Destiny
  • America had a God-given destiny
  • Shining example to the rest of the world
-1820s thought America would not go past the Rocky Mts. -eager to explore and settle the frontier
-America's right to expansion lay in "our manifest destiny to occupy and possess the whole of the Continent which Providence has given us."
-Expansion was necessary to extend democratic institutions to sparsely populated areas

Polk's Election

  • Annexation of TX and territorial expansion
  • Whig v. Democrat
  • Demanded annexation of TX and the right to OR
  • Polk won
  • Used manifest destiny to justify decisions
-Key issue in presidential campaign of 1844
-Whig Party (Henry Clay) not in support of anx. of TX
-Dem. (James K. Polk) demanded anx. of TX and all of America's right to Oregon.
-Polk barely won-used MD as a way to justify anx. of TX and claiming OR, Purchasing CA and displacing Native American tribes

Texas and Oregon

  • Approved Texas as 28th state
  • Acquiring Oregon was more difficult
  • "Fifty-four forty or fight"
  • Compromised at the 49th parallel
-Congress approved adding TX to Union
-Both US and Britain claimed the area-US would go to war with Brit. in order to get all of the Oregon Ter.
-Polk proposed a compromise that would divide Oregon at the 49th parallel-averted war with GB

The Mexican War

OUtbreak of War

  • Texas question had to be settled with Mexico
  • Texas question had to be settled with Mexico
  • Polk claims Rio Grande River for U.S.
  • Polk claims 
  • April 25, 1846-Mexican force attacks
  • May 13, 1846-Congress declares war on Mexico
-Polk avoided war with Brit, but still had to deal with the Texas issue and Mexico
-Mexico broke off dip. relations with US after TX annexation
-There was a dispute about the TX border
-Mexican force crosses the Rio Grande and attacks American recon party
-Polk asked that Congress declare war on Mexico

Opposition to War

  • Abolitionists
  • Henry David Thoreau
  • Whig party and Abraham Lincoln
-Saw it as a way to extend slavery into new terr.
-Refused to pay poll tax as a gesture of opposition "civil disobedience"-MLK, Jr.
-Opposed the war and asked Polk to identify exact location where blood had been shed-thought Polk was using the issue as a way declare war and gain new territories

Conquest of Mexico

-Won a series of victories in NE Mexico-regarded as a hero after he defeated a much larger Mexican army at Battle of Buena Vista
-Captured Santa Fe and helped secure CA
-Landed at Vera Cruz and battled their way to Mexico City

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

  • Lost about 1/3 of its territory
  • Accepted Rio Grande as new border
  • New Mexico
  • US acquired over 500K miles of new territory
-Mex. lost about a third of its territory
-Turned over New Mexico and CA to US
-New Mex. included present day Arizona, Nevada, and Utah and parts of Colorado and WY
-US agreed to pay Mexico 15 mil and to pay for all American citizen claims agains the Mexican govt.

War Consequences

  • Combat experience to junior officers
  • American transformed into continental nation
  • Added new territories-bitter dispute about ext. of slavery
  • Key step in the road to disunion
-Gave combat experience to Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant
-America spanned from ocean to ocean
