Colonies - Areas of territory in distant lands run by a foreign nation. (Ex: Egypt being run by Britain)
Colonialism - Conquering process by which these colonies are built.
De-Colonization
Often many countries were not ready for independence.
Many countries' borders were defined by European powers and could include groups that did not get along.
De-Colonization
Many African countries faced civil wars, ethnic cleansing, and warfare with their new neighbors.
Political Instability
In 50 years of independence, Africa has suffered some 67 coups in 26 of its countries.
Nationalism:
Many new nations were based around nationalism: great pride in one's nation.
This was done to unite the people in the new countries together.
