Did you know that some penguins can hold their breath for twenty minutes?
In this presentation you will learn alot about penguins. From where they live to what thay eat.

Descriptoin
Penguins like many birds are covered in feathers. Their feathers can vary in color from the classic black and white to varius shades of orange and yellow. They also have razor sharp beaks so they can easily catch slippery fish in the water. Penguins also have fins and flippers that they use while swimming (they use their feet to steer). Penguins can be as tall as four feet or the size of a duck. They stand flat-footed and erect, and are sometimes mistaken for little men from a distance.

Habitat
Penguins can live a warm dry climate, cool places where plants are able to grow or a snowy and icy one. The most common places where penguins live are The coasts of Antarctica, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Chile, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands (all places south of the equator).

Adaptations
Penguins are warm-blooded. This helps them maintain a constant internal temperture. Another adaptation they have is that they can live in drastically different climates. They can also see better underwater because a penguin spends more than half their life in the water. A penguins wing was once used for flying, but the middle joint stiffened so over time they became more paddle shape to made swimming faster and more efficent. Their mouths, throats, and stomachs can stretch so they can eat bigger fish and various other small sea creatures, but also so the male can store food while the female gets food for herself, him, and their baby penguin (or reverse).

FUN FACTS

  • Prehistoric penguins were 6 feet tall!
  • Penguins don't know how to eat on land (if they live in a zoo the zookeepers have to teach them).
  • Penguins can drink sea water because they have a glane that filters out the salt.

In conclution...
Penguins are pretty cool birds that can't fly, but are master swimmers that live in a lot of intersting places south of the equator.
