WHAT IS MATTER?

  • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
  • The amount of space an object takes up is called volume
  • Mass is measured by using a balance
  • Volume is measured using a graduated cylinder
  • Weight is the gravitational pull on an object and is measured by a spring scale

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • A physical property is a property that can be observed
  • Examples of Physical properties are density and state
  • A physical change - when matter changes, but not chemically
  • An example of a physical change is a solid melting into a liquid

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • Chemical property-describes the ability of changing matter
  • When something has the ability to burn, it has flammability
  • Chemical change-when a substance changes, then has new chemical properties
  • A display of fireworks is an example of a chemical change
  • Most physical and chemical changes can be reversed
