Why were people mummified?

WHY WERE PEOPLE MUMMIFIED?

  • The Ancient Egyptians believed that the body was the house for the soul
  • Even after death, the Egyptians believed the spirit could only live on if the body was preserved forever
  • The Egyptians also believed that if the body was lost, so too was the spirit
  • The egyptians believed that when someone died their soul left their body
  • The soul would then return and be reunited with the body after it was buried

How were people mummified?

HOW WERE PEOPLE MUMMIFIED ?

  • 70 days were required to prepare a mummy
  • 4 organs were removed during mummification (lungs, liver, stomach, intestines
  • The cutter cut the body on the left side of the abdomen to remove the organs
  • The embalmer inserted natron packets throughout the body
  • The natron packets were left in the body for 35 days

  • Ancient egyptians started making mummies around 3400 b.c

  • Most royal males were positioned with their arms crossed over their chest
