Know Your ABCs
Of the American Revolutionary War

American Colonists
The people who fought against Britain in the Revolutionary War. They put up a great effort against the world's best army.

British Soldiers
They were the people who fought to keep the colonies under their control. They did not like the rebellion in the colonies.

American Colonies
This was where the colonists lived. They knew it well, so they did well against the British.

Delaware River
What the colonial militia crossed to attack the Hessians on Christmas.
It gave the colonists a big advantage.

England
This is the country that the British soldiers came from. It had the best army at the time of the war.

France
The country that, after Ben Franklin persuaded them to, helped the colonists beat Britain in the war. They did this by blocking the sea route back to Britain.

Generals
They commanded the armies. They were often effective leaders.

Hessians
They were paid money to fight for England, although they were originally from Germany. As many as 1,000 of them got captured by the colonists in a surprise attack.

Independence
This is what the colonists fought for. They wanted it for themselves, but kept slaves.

He was the general who tried to carry out the British plan which was to cut the colonies in two. He was not successful, though.

He ruled Britain at the time of the war. He made the cause of the American Revolution.

They stayed loyal to Britain. They were no match for the patriots, though.

He was the prime minister of England at the end of the war. He heard from General Cornwallis about losing the war.

This was the day that Burgoyne lost his army, but not the war. He failed to cut the colonies in two.

Patriots
The side that fought for independence against the best army in the world at the time. With strategy and knowledge, they won the war.

Quartering Act
The British soldiers were allowed to live in any colonial house they wanted. This was unfair to the colonists.

Revolution
The American Revolution sparked the war. There have been other revolutions around the world.

Saratoga
The place that the colonists stopped John Burgoyne.
It turned the tables for both sides.

Turning Point
The battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the war. It showed the French that they had a good chance of doing well helping the Americans.

Underdog
The colonists were thought of as the underdog. But, as it turned out, they weren't.

Vermont
Where the Green Mountain Boys came from. They helped in the war by capturing cannons from the British.

Washington
He was a well known colonial general. After the war, he became our first president.

Xavier Cathedral
Where many soldiers were buried. It is in Vincennes.

Yorktown
This was where the final battle of the war was fought, and the Americans won! Yorktown was in Virginia, not New York.

Zealous
The continental army was zealous about winning the war. They had a reason, and they stuck to it.
