WHO HE WAS

  • 1783-1830 born in Caracas, New Granada
  • South American soldier
  • Born into wealth, well educated
  • Helped Venezuela gain independence
  • Wanted to unite South America, GW of SA

IDEALS

  • Bolívar was a Republican, with enlightenment ideals
  • Wanted independence from Spain for S. America
  • Bolívar was inspired by George Washington
  • Wanted to make one big SA country like US
  • Campaigned with creole leaders(José de San Martin)

WHAT HE DID

  • Took up arms against Spanish rule in 1811
  • Struggled at first, went into exile twice
  • 1819- army crushed Spanish in Columbia
  • Later campaigned in Venezuela, Peru etc
  • 1824- creoles overcame Spanish armies in SA

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Wanted to make "Gran Columbia"
  • Attempted to get all SA countries to join as one
  • EX: Peru, Bolivia(named after Bolivar)
  • BUT regional amd political differences stopped it
  • Bolívar declared SA, "ungovernable"

MORE INFO

  • Bolívar was very disappointed
  • After breakup, Bolívar died
  • He died en route to self-imposed exile to Europe

GRAN COLUMBIA

WAS HE SUCCESSFUL?

  • Yes and no
  • Helped SA countries gain independence
  • Did not get his wish of United SA (Gran Columbia)
  • Accomplished some but not all goals of goals
  • (SA= South America)
