PRESENTATION OUTLINE
For our art assignment I will be smashing two objects:
Object One is an old phone made by Nokia. It has a thick plastic shell which is black and is detailed with a black glassed camera and screen. The numbers are in scripted into silver and come with all the symbols as normal phones. It is about a 15 year old model but I have only had it for 6 years.
Object two is a electronic calculator by Dats. It's screen is surrounded by silver and black plastic and has four orange squares near the top. It also has a grey plastic part where the numbers and symbols are shown. It is quite a basic calculator - and lacks some of the buttons of the scientific calculator - with just your simple/most needed buttons. It is about 3 years old and was bought when it first came out.
The reason I have choose to smash these objects is because I have upgraded and no longer need them. As our purpose is to build a structure I have also thought about what the numbers, symbols and colours could do for me in a design aspect. With these objects I intend to build a well structured, and unique sculpture using all the artistic skills we have learnt this term. Looking forward, I cannot wait to pick up the hammer and screwdriver in order to break up and dissemble my objects into smaller more manipulative pieces I can use for my final sculpture.
First of All I used the various sizes of screwdrivers to dissemble my calculator and phone. I used the screwdrivers to remove different layers of screws, solar panels and mother boards. Once these objects had been under the turn of the screwdriver they were in multiple large pieces still quite clean and un damaged.
Next up was the hammer, going outside and using a swinging arm action, I pretty much made a mess of the two original objects. I smashed the glass screens allowing me to access the inside and smashed up the mother boards combining my objects together in a clump.
Once inside it really interested me how similar they really were, the colours, shapes and even objects matched up with each other. They both managed to fit solar panels, battery packs, numerous amount of wires and both disappeared easily under the hammer. Some challenges during deconstruction included breaking through the thick shell of the phone and separating the two tightly glued sections of the calculator, removing the numbers and symbols also proved a challenge. Looking forward, I am excited to place my fairly broken pieces together and create a new masterpiece that I have come up with myself.
When entering the Assemblage process I already had an idea in mind to create it as a wave. To create my wave style structure I used the supplied hot glue guns, pressing down the trigger, to glue together my many pieces in a curved style shape. I have used every single piece of my phone and calculator that remained after the smashing process having barely enough to throw any away.
The interesting part about creating this sculpture was been able to have free control over what pieces you used and when and where you used them. The hardest part about making my sculpture was been able to give it the support to hold everything up and in place, and been able to create a curve using more square and rectangular pieces of material. My sculpture reminds me of the beach as I have reinterpreted a large wave, I chose to do this style design because I thought it was something a little different which could challenge my abilities.
In the end I am really happy with how my sculpture has turned out, it is a bit jagged and loosely glued in some spots but in the end I think I was able to complete and hand up a pretty good assessment. I would rate my assessment a 16/20, because I have thought of a style and have pretty successfully reached my idea, I have followed the task criteria to the best of my ability and even thought it isn't perfect I still feel I have handed up a project that I am really proud of.
