Coalwood is an unincorporated community coal town in McDowell country west Virginia USA as of the 1990 census the population was 900. The coal mine in Coalwood reached its peak in the 1960's and finally shut down production on October 1, 1982. The town is the setting of the best selling memoir, Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam and the movie October Sky based on the book.
Sonny destroyed his mom's fence and scared the townsfolk when he launch the rocket for the first time. Instead of his mom being angry, she saw it as a way to uses his rockets to get into college. This was a turning point in October Sky.
The Rocket Boys construction at their own cape is similar to the challenges faced by the USA's rocket program. Because the football team has been suspended for next season,Sonny's brother will now need to find another way to go to college beside a football scholarship.
Miss Riley, Sonny's chemistry teacher has an important book to give to the boys about building rockets. While he's traveling alone to return to his town, he meet's a woman who invites him into her house. Later on he discovers from his father two very important events that are related to the woman.
Lightening struck at the mine where sonny's father is leader of the rescue team. Sonny is worried and sneaks out of the house go to the mine and sees an injured man who helped Sonny build the rockets. When Sonny's mother finds out, she is very angry and slaps him. This makes Sonny feel even worse after seeing someone that he cares about that's hurt.
Sonny's teacher has cancer so he has to prepare for the science fair by himself. The science fair judges are concerned about encouraging rocketry because it is dangerous. Even so, Sonny wins the science with the help of the machinists.
