THE CRUSADES

BY CHRIS GOTHMAN AND JON PEREZ

WHO

  • Christian warriors from Western Europe fought the Muslims called infidels
  • Saint Bernard of Clairvaux enlisted the help of King Louis VII of France and Emperor Conrad II of Germany to start the Second Crusade
  • Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of Germany, Richard I of England, and Philip II Augustus of France started the Third Crusade

WHAT

  • The First Crusaders created four crusader states.
  • The Second Crusades were a total failure
  • The Third Crusades were also a failure

WHEN

  • The first crusade was 1095 to 1099
  • The second was 1147 to 1149
  • The third was 1187 to 1192

WHY

  • The first crusade was meant to liberate Jerusalem
  • The second crusade took place because the Muslims began to retaliate
  • The third happened because the Muslims recaptured Jerusalem so the Christians wanted to regain it

WHERE

  • In the first crusades, were an attempt for Christians to liberate Palestine and Jerusalem
  • In the second crusade, Christians failed in an attack on Damascus
  • In the third crusade, upon failing, the Christian pilgrims were granted free access to Jerusalem by Saladin

RESULT

  • The first crusade resulted in the Muslims retaliating to take back Jerusalem
  • The second crusade resulted in the Christians attempting to take back Jerusalem after loosing it
  • The third resulted in Richard the Lionhearted negotiating a settlement with Saladin to allow Christian pilgrims access to Jerusalem
