  • Flint Hill near Shelby,N.C.

FACTS

  • Born on January 6, 1924, died March 28, 2012
  • Father, mother, and brothers played instruments
  • Had four brothers

  • In his early teens he played for local dances
  • Attended high school in nearby Boiling Springs
  • In 1939 he played with a group called the Morris Brothers

  • Left to look after his mother and work
  • Worked at the textile mills during WW2
  • He joined bluegrass legend Bill Monroe bluegrass boys band

  • He elevated the banjo from a rhythm instrument to a load instrument through his particular three finger picking style also known as the Scruggs style
  • He quit the Bluegrass Boys in 1948 and formed a band
  • His bands name was called the Foggy Mountain Boys
