ESTABLISHED

  • Was established in 1871 as the United States commission of fish and fisheries.

PURPOSE

  • The purpose of studying and recommending solutions to a noted decline in the stocks of food fish.
  • Its early work focused on the effect of birds in controlling agricultural pests
  • The Fish and Wildlife Service was finally created in 1940
  • Bureaus of Fisheries and Biological Survey were combined after being moved to the Department of the Interior.

DANIEL M. ASHE

  • Daniel M. Ashe was confirmed on June 30, 2011 as the 16th Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Ashe served as the Service’s Deputy Director for Policy beginning in 2009
  • From 1998 to 2003, Ashe served as the Chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System
  • change toward a science-driven, landscape conservation business model

IMPORTANT EVENTS

  • It has created over 560 national wildlife refuges and thousands of small wetlands.
  • Also created 70 national fish hatcheries and 65 fishery resource offices.
