RACE

RACE: Physical characteristics that distinguish one group from another.

RACE IS A MYTH: It is a construct of society and the human mind. There is only ONE RACE=HUMAN!

MYTH ONE: That one race is superior to another

MYTH TWO: That a 'pure' race exists

GENOCIDE: The systematic annihilation or attempted annihilation of a people based on their presumed race or ethnic group

ETHNICITY

ETHNICITY: (And Ethnic): Having distinctive cultural characteristics

ETHNIC IDENTITY: People who identify on the basis of a common ancestor or cultural heritage. The nation of origin- distinctive food, dress, language, music, religion, family names, etc...

ETHNIC WORK: Activities designed to discover, enhance, or maintain ethnic and racial identification

MINORITY GROUP
&
DOMINANT GROUP

MINORITY GROUP: People who are singled out for unequal treatment and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination.

DOMINANT GROUP: The group with the most power, greatest privileges, and highest social class.

MELTING POT: The view that Americans of various backgrounds would blend into a sort of ethnic stew. - Because of the strong ties to ethnic root- we are not a Melting Pot, but more accurately a 'tossed salad'

RACISM

DISCRIMINATION: An act of unfair treatment directed against an individual or a group

PREJUDICE: An attitude or prejudging, usually in a negative way

RACISIM: Prejudice and discrimintation on the basis of race.

DISCRIMINATION

DISCRIMINATION: An act of unfair treatment directed against an individual or a group

INDIVIDUAL DISCRIMINTATION: The negative treatment of one person by another on the basis of that person's perceived characteristics

INSTITUTIONAL DISCRIMINATION: Negative treatment of a minority group that is built into a society's insitutions; also called systemic discrimination

PREJUDICE

PREJUDICE: An attitude or prejudging, usually in a negative way

SCAPEGOAT: An individual or group unfairly blamed for someone else's troubles

AUTHORITARIAN PERSONALITY: Theodor Adorno's term for people who are prejudiced and rank high on scales of conformity, in tolerance, insecurity, respect for authority, and submissiveness to superiors.

FUNCTIONALISM:

CONFLICT THOERY:
RESERVE LABOR FORCE: The unemployed; unemployed workers are thought of as being "in reserve"- capitalists take them "out of reserve" (put them back to work) during times of high production and then lay them off (put them back on reserve) when they are no longer needed.

SPLICT LABOR MARKET: Workers split along racial, ehtbnic, gender, age, or any other lines; this split is exploited by owners to weaken the bargaining power of workers

SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM:
SELECTIVE PERCEPTION: Seeing certain features of an object situation, but remaining blind to others

Global Patterns of Intergroup Relations:

COMPARTMENTALIZE: To separate acts from feelings or attitudes

GENOCIDE: The systematic annihilation or attempted annihilation of a people based on their presumed race or ethnic group.

POPULATION TRANSFER: Forcing a minority group to move

ETHNIC CLEANSING: A policy of population eliminatio, including forcible expulsion and genocide.

INTERNAL COLONIALISM: The policy of economically exploiting minority groups

SEGREGATION: The policy of keeping racial or ethnic groups apart

ASSIMILATION: The process of being absorbed into the mainstream culture

MULTICULTURALISM (PLURALISM): A philosophy or political policy that permits or encourages ethnic difference

RACE & ETHNICITY
IN AMERICA

WHITE EUROPEANS:
WASP: White Anglo-Saxon Protestant; narrowly, an American of English descent; broadly an American of Western European ancestry

WHITE ETHNICS: White immigrants to the United States whose cultures differ from that of the WASP's.

NATIVE AMERICANS:
PAN-INDIANISM: A movement that focuses on common elements in the cultures of Native Americans in order to develop a cross-tribal self-identity and to work toward the welfare of all Native Americans.
