Born in 1491
French explorer
Mother's name was Jamet Cartier
Married to a lady named Marie Catherine in 1519
One of the world's most important explorers!
A statue of Cartier is in Saint-Malo, France
Died near St. Malo in 1557 at 66 years old

He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean
Visited American Indians
Went to school to become a navigator
Cartier named Canada after the Indians who called it Kanata
Explorer who helped France claim part of North America
Claimed Gaspe Bay for the King of France
First person to explore New France
He was looking for the Northwest passage to Asia but bumped into what we now call Canada
He claimed this land for France and called it New France
