WHO WAS JACQUES CARTIER?

  • Born in 1491
  • French explorer
  • Mother's name was Jamet Cartier
  • Married to a lady named Marie Catherine in 1519
  • One of the world's most important explorers!
  • A statue of Cartier is in Saint-Malo, France
  • Died near St. Malo in 1557 at 66 years old

WHAT DID JACQUES CARTIER DO?

  • He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean
  • Visited American Indians
  • Went to school to become a navigator
  • Cartier named Canada after the Indians who called it Kanata
  • Explorer who helped France claim part of North America
  • Claimed Gaspe Bay for the King of France
  • First person to explore New France
  • He was looking for the Northwest passage to Asia but bumped into what we now call Canada
  • He claimed this land for France and called it New France

WHERE DID JACQUES CARTIER EXPLORE?

  • He explored Brazil, Newfoundland, Labrador, New France and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • In 1535, he explored the St. Lawrence river in Canada
  • He explored what is now Prince Edward Island

WHEN DID JACQUES CARTIER EXPLORE?

  • Took three sea journies to North America in 1534, 1535, and 1541
  • He set sail across the Atlantic on a sailing ship with 110 crew members
  • He returned to France in 1542

WHY DID JACQUES CARTIER EXPLORE?

  • The king of France ordered him to find a shorter route to Asia
  • He wanted to find riches of gold, silks and spices there
  • He hoped to find new lands
  • In 1541, the King of France sent Cartier back to Canada to set up colonies

WHAT TOOLS DID CARTIER USE DURING HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • He explored on a huge ship with 110 crew
  • He took sea biscuits, salted beef and pork, cheese, butter and sugar on the journey
  • It was difficult to store food
  • He used maps and compasses to navigate
