Warm-up
You’re lost in the woods with an extraordinarily irritating person. This is torture and you do not know what is worse: the person you are with or your impending doom of dying in the woods...until you find a survival kit! What are some things that you would like to be in that kit to save your life and/or get you back to your home?!
Objectives
- Identify latitude and longitude.
- Find points on the map using the above.
- Apply what we learn to map questions.
Anticipatory Set:
What if…..you found a piece of paper marking the coordinates of a ranger station. The coordinates are as follows: 15° N 30° W.
Latitude
Latitude is the angular distance of any object from the equator measured in degrees.Objects are either north or south of the equator.
Longitude
The lines running vertically around the Earth are called longitude. These lines are called meridians, and measure how far east or west an object is.
Prime Meridian
The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude.
